What are differences between Bolts and Screws?

“Please hand me a screw!” “Let’s fasten that bolt!” Such conversations might confuse those outside the fastener industry. Questions like “Which one is a screw, and which is a bolt?” may arise. Their definitions can also be unclear and may cause miscommunication that led to problem in their work.

Screw: A screw is designed to fasten into an object all the way through, and its tip is not meant to exceed from the other side. Common types include:

Cross-recessed screws (e.g., Pan, Flat, Truss head)

Hexagon socket screws (e.g., Cap, Button, Flat)

Set screws

Tapping screw and Drilling screw

Etc.

Screws are ideal for woodworking, sheet metal work, machine, and other applications where the fastener will remain embedded within a single material. They can be driven with different tools like screwdrivers or wrenches. Screwdrivers bit may vary depending on screw fastening system.



Bolt: A bolt is intended to pass through an object, with the tip potentially extending beyond the hole. It is typically secured with a female nut and washer. Examples include:

Hexagon bolts

Flange bolts

Anchor bolt

Stud bolt

Structural bolt set (F10T, S10T)

Etc.

Bolts are better suited for heavy-duty construction projects that involve concrete, metal, bar, and structural place where a strong, secure hold is necessary. They are mostly be driven with wrenches or specific tools.

These terms can be varied depending on the individual. For instance, a Hex socket Cap Screw might also be referred to as a Hex socket Cap Bolt as well.

Also, application may not only fix as above mention for each type of fasteners. User may adjust the application of each fastener to their situation and suitability. Sometimes it is hard to judge that this screw is suited for which application and which one is correct or wrong.
