Nylok Locking Solution for Fasteners: What is It and How Does It Work?
Fasteners are devices that mechanically join or attach two or more objects together. They are widely used in various industries and applications, such as construction, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and medical. However, fasteners can also face some challenges and problems, such as loosening, corrosion, leakage, or damage, due to factors such as vibration, stress, temperature, or moisture. To prevent these issues and ensure the quality, safety, and reliability of fasteners, a locking solution is needed. One of the most effective and innovative locking solutions for fasteners is Nylok.
What is Nylok?
Nylok is a value-added solutions provider of resin, adhesive, and lubricant coatings for threaded fastener applications. Nylok was founded in 1942 and has been a trusted brand and partner ever since. Nylok has more than 150 patents over 75 years, representing important solutions to the ever-changing needs of its customers. Nylok serves customers around the world in a diverse range of industries, such as automotive, aerospace/defense, electronics, and industria1.
Example of our available Nylok® solutions
1. Nytemp® for High-temperature application
NYTEMP® self-locking patch is made of a high-temperature polymer with an original orange color coating. It is applied to the threads of a fastener. When NYTEMP® is applied, it creates a wedge between the fastener and the mating part. Metal-to-metal contact opposite the patch effect is created after the polymer is compressed. This creates vibration resistance to prevent loosening, along with a reusable function. Its function is almost the same as Blue-Nylok but with a greater range of temperature while operating in outgassing characteristics. This makes NYTEMP® well suited for use in space, electronic, and clean-room applications.
Operating temperature range: -70 to 450°F (-57 to 232°C)
2. Precote® 19-2 for immediate locking function
Precote® 19-2 is a nonreactive coating that provides a performance locking function. With its original red color coating, it can perform a locking function in all kinds of assemblies. It can operate the locking function immediately after fastening as the coating will be completely dried after application. This can be used for metallic and non-metallic surfaces.
3. NySeal® for fasteners build-in gasket-like seal coating
NySeal® is a seal coating that acts like a gasket to prevent leakage of fluids and gases under pressure. With its original green color coating, this coating is permanently fused into the bearing surface (under the screw head) of the fastener. After fastening, the screw applied with NySeal® will fill the space between the bearing surface under the screw head and the bore. It can resist most chemicals such as alcohol, oil, diesel fuel, gasoline, and other fluids. Plus, this can be applied to most fastener heads.
NySeal® is packed with several advantages such as:
- Greatly reducing procurement and preparation time of gasket seals, O-Rings, or other sealant compounds.
- Permanently fused into the bearing surface and does not shrink or dry over time.
- Seals the leak path of fluids and gases.
- Reusable.
- Screw strength remains the same.
- Prevent galvanic corrosion of different material assemblies.
4. Nycote®/Nycote Plus for thread protection from welding application
Nycote®/Nycote Plus® are types of thread masking/protection solutions that increase fastening ability to ensure smooth fastening when welding operations are involved in the installation process. This thread protection solution is suited for welding-related applications where coating or weld spatter is not allowed to get into the thread system to prevent unwanted adhesion. Nycote®/Nycote® Plus provide thread protection with Teflon-like coating or Fluoropolymer powder. They are widely used in automotive, agricultural, machinery, and other welding-related manufacturing.
5. Nytorq® as thread lubricant for anti-galling
Nytorq® is a synthetic wax lubricant coating for the threaded part of a fastener. This lubricant film acts like a lubricant fluid but turns into a built-in lubricant fused to the thread area to reduce friction. This built-in lubricant coating helps fasteners prevent galling (cracking or wear from adhesion between sliding surfaces) along with providing high clamp-load.
6. Nystay® to hold fasteners in place during work-in-progress, transportation, or assembly
Nystay® is a plastic-based (Polyolefin) pre-coating applied directly to the shank of any fastener, regardless of whether it is threaded or non-threaded, to secure them during transportation, fabrication, or assembly. Fasteners coated with Nystay® can be pre-inserted into the component. This solution can reduce the time users spend selecting the right screw and storing time as the screw is already securely preassembled.
Several Nylok® products are certified by US Military Standards (MS) and National Aviation Standards (NAS), and the number of certifications is increasing along with the introduction of new products.
